Commissioner Announces the 2006 Principals of the Year

Amid the ongoing work in New Jersey to improve upon the excellence of our public school systems, Dr. Matthew Murphy of the Westwood Regional School District and Mr. Robert Roggenstein of Jersey City School District have been selected as Principals of the Year by New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA). In recognition of their exemplary service, both men were presented with plaques at the New Jersey State Board of Education meeting in Trenton on October 4, 2006. The State Board of Education and Commissioner of Education Lucille Davy recognized Dr. Murphy and Mr. Roggenstein for their outstanding leadership and dedication to the success of New Jersey youth. In addition to this presentation, Mr. Murphy and Mr. Roggenstein will be honored at an awards luncheon at the Annual NJPSA Fall Convention on November 9, 2006 in Atlantic City.
The Principal of the Year Award, which began in 2000, recognizes outstanding elementary, middle and secondary school principals who provide high quality learning opportunities. Founded on the ideal that quality principals are essential to successful schools, the Principal of the Year Award honors those exceptional professionals who promote a cohesive learning environment in which all children are able to succeed. This year’s honorees represent the high caliber professionals that make New Jersey Schools so successful.
Dr. Matthew Murphy, Principal of the Berkeley Avenue Elementary School since 1999, takes a strength-based approach to leadership, working to nurture his faculty and staff through on-going activities designed to promote creativity and excellence. His leadership has excited his students and motivated his staff to look beyond traditional tactics and find solutions that work.
Mr. Robert Roggenstein, Principal of McNair Academic High School since 1990, is a 42-year veteran of the New Jersey public school system. For the past 33 years, Mr. Roggenstein has served as principal throughout the Jersey City Public School District. His colleagues, students, parents and staff all cite his dedication to student achievement, staff collaboration and creative approaches to education as the benchmarks of both his exemplary career and the remarkable success of McNair Academic High School. The New Jersey Principal of the Year Program: Rewarding Visionary Leadership is cosponsored by NJPSA, the New Jersey Department of Education and Educational Testing Service.
The New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA) recognizes that strong leadership is essential to educational excellence in New Jersey. NJPSA is dedicated to assisting school leaders promote effective teaching and student learning. NJPSA asserts itself on local, county, state and national levels to address school quality and the professional leadership needs of school administrators and supervisors.
Awards will be presented by Commissioner Lucille Davy at a Recognition Ceremony on Thursday November 9, 2006 at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City New Jersey.
